THE HISTORY OF RUG MASTERS, INC.
The history of Rug Masters started in 1913 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. A small rug cleaning and
repair business was established by Louis Shogry. His eldest son, Edward, followed in his footsteps
learning the creative art of oriental rugs. By 1951 Edward Shogry had moved to Charleston and
opened a rug-cleaning plant there. After relocating his business twice, he established a permanent
plant at 117 Calhoun Street. His son in law, John Kammeyer, joined the business in 1976. Upon Mr.
Shogry's retirement in 1983, John became general manager. His wife, Victoria Shogry, also joined
the business in 1988.
Hurricane Hugo destroyed the building in 1989 and the operation was transplanted to our current
location: 1001 Morrison Drive. The business grew rapidly and soon called for an expansion. The
size of the building doubled and three large showrooms were eventually added.
In 2003, Kurt Kammeyer, joined the business right out of college, creating the fourth generation of
involvement with oriental rugs.
Our huge experience with rug-cleaning has given us a tremendous insight on choosing oriental
rugs that today's customer can rely on for quality.
Today, 75% of our business is based on sales; we also handle the cleaning and repair of over 5,000
rugs a year.
